Job Stress: Dealing With Stress at Work

Not many people are saying “Hell yeah, I get to go to work tomorrow morning!” before they go to bed at night. In fact, most people feel extremely stressed at work. Stress has some serious health consequences, so there is a high need to get rid of it. Getting a low stress job is extremely difficult; therefore people should learn how to deal with stress at work. This will make their job much more interesting and fun. Maybe you will join the few people that get excited for work.

To help eliminate stress in your workplace you will first need to be more organized in the morning. Having a stressful morning will often follow you into your work day. People usually rush in the morning; they get stuck in traffic, have road rage, drop their kids off at school, chug their coffee, and finally get into work barely making it on time. Planning your morning out and following this plan will help you deal with this early stress. Waking up 15-20 minutes earlier than you normally would, will give you some more time to do things in the morning, instead of feeling rushed.

Know what you are supposed to do during work. Believe it or not, a lot of people are completely unclear of what they are actually required to do during the day. They never know if what they have done is too much or too little. This contributes to job stress. To deal with this have a talk with your boss. Figure out exactly what is needed from you, and draw up a plan to accomplish the work. This will act as a guide for you and help you when dealing with stress at work.

Try and avoid drama as much as you can at work. Drama often causes problems and problems often cause us to be stressed. It is best to stay out of any conflict that might be going on between your coworkers. You should not gossip about other employees, nor should you talk too deeply about religion or politics, and try not to make fun of anybody, even if you are just joking. All of these can cause drama between you and others.

Being organized is an easy and great way to help eliminate stress at work. If you find your desk extremely cluttered, you may want to take an hour or so, after work, and organize it. Use your filing cabinet or desk to store papers in. You will notice that you work more efficiently this way. This is something that anyone can do. Also be sure that you are organized with time. That way you are less likely to be rushed around.

Being comfortable while working is another great way to reduce stress. No one likes to work while their back seems to be on fire, or their wrists hurt from typing so much. If you don’t have to share a desk, ask your boss if you can replace some of the stuff that is at it. Get a more comfortable chair, or grab yourself an ergonomic keyboard. Little things like that will make you more comfortable while you are working are good for knocking your stress down a few levels.

Try not to do so much multitasking. We tend to get stressed and frustrated when we have a lot on our plates. Trying to do it all at one time is even worse and can be an invite for mistakes. If you have a lot to do, do it one step at a time. Break big projects down into smaller steps and focus on completing it one step at a time. Being focused on one thing at a time will definitely help you when dealing with stress at work.

Taking walks on your breaks can help you reduce stress on the job. Get outside and get some fresh air into your system. The exercise also helps you. Exercise is one of the best ways to eliminate stress overall. By taking small exercise breaks throughout the day you are helping your body in many ways, but more importantly you are taking the stress out of your life.

If you are able to during work, listen to some music. Music is a great way to help you relax. I remember one place I worked at allowed me to listen to my mp3 player, and it definitely made my work day better. I was in my own little world, completely focused on what I had to accomplish. Plus, it made the day go by faster.
