Chances are if you have landed on this page you already know what hoarding is, but for those that don’t, hoarding is a type of obsessive compulsive disorder in which a person has tons of possessions and cannot part with them. Hoarder’s houses are usually a mess because they often cannot find room to put everything, so it ends up in random places around the house. Compulsive hoarding can become a serious issue for both the hoarder and people they have relationships with, so learning how to stop hoarding is crucial.
There is actually no way to cure someone’s obsessive hoarding problem, but there are ways to manage the issue. I have found a product about how to stop hoarding in 7 days and I’ve done some research on it and it has helped tons of people with their disorder. This product is only $29.50 and it is well worth it because you get theTreatments for Compulsive Hoarding Disorder, plus a couple of bonus eBooks that help you get your life back on track. I strongly recommend this eBook.
If you haven’t used something in over a year you can probably get rid of it. A lot of hoarders believe that they have a use for everything that they have. This is one of the reasons they keep so many things, but in reality they will never use most of the things they have. When cleaning out and you are not sure whether you will have use for an item of not just think, have you ever used this item before. If the answer is no then you will probably never use it and should just get rid of it. Sometimes they don’t even realize that they have most of the stuff they are keeping.
If you have more than one kind of something, pick one and get rid of the rest. If you have three bikes, pick your favorite and toss the other two. When it comes to hoarding, more is not necessarily a good thing. Don’t take too much time to think about the decision. The longer you think the more you may become attached to it and unable to give it up.
When cleaning out the house sort all of the items into piles. Do three different categories: one for charity, one for selling, and one for trashing. If you think something has value toss it in the sell pile. You may be able to get some extra money with all of the things you have. If you don’t think you will be able to sell it, but you think someone might find use for it put it in the charity pile. If something is broken or unavailable you can place it in the trash pile. Keep the piles to just these three categories. Having too many piles will slow you down. Make sure once something is put into a pile not to touch it again, because you may start to rethink things.
Make sure that you keep up with the cleaning. That means every single day even if you can only find time to do a couple of items at a time. If you stop for even one day you risk forgetting about cleaning and will ultimately stop and your piles will just keep climbing. Be extremely strict and give yourself some rewards. Allow yourself some TV time after you have cleaned up for an hour or so.
Remember, learning how to stop hoarding can take months or even years.Your house will not be magically clean tomorrow when you wake up. Take it one room at a time and give yourself a pat on the back once you have done it. If you feel like you can’t do this by yourself, you can call a few friends over to help. Being able to share time with people will make cleaning somewhat more fun. At least it will not be as bad as cleaning alone. These people will also help keep you focused and on track.
