Deficiency: Teaches Kids Not To Be Defiant

Are you tired of the way your child tries to take control of you? If your child is rude or does not obey you they might be defiant. Every child defies their parents sometimes, but if they do it all the time you may have a problem.

This attitude is curable, but it will not be cured overnight. The only way to help your child with this problem is to not only change your child, but to also change your own parenting skills. Children with this type of attitude will have reduced chance for social success, so helping them with this problem now would be ideal. This will take patience and commitment, but will pay off in the long run.

Signs and Symptoms

Look for these signs and symptoms to see if your child has a defiant problem. Don’t be completely sure right away because a lot of children show these symptoms every once in a while. However, if they continue to show these signs they may have a defiant attitude.

• Stubborn
• Disobedient
• Challenging
• Angry
• Irritable
• Doesn’t accept authority
• Pushes limits
• Blames others
• Disrespectful

Solution to Stop Defiant Attitude

Uncover the Reason

You must understand why your child is acting disrespectful, rude, or angry all of the time. Below are a few reasons why your child may have a defiant attitude. Once you find the reason you may help your child cure this behavior.

• Faulty discipline
• Relationship problems
• Jealous of someone
• Low self-esteem
• Anger problems
• Under a lot of stress
• Learning disability
• Depression
• Copies others attitudes

Pick Your Issues

Defiant children turn everything they do into a struggle. To help this find out what issues are important and what issues can be thrown away. This will help them have a less controlling lifestyle. Instead of trying to change so many things at once, you should try to change things one at a time. If your child shows many of the signs above, you should pick one and help them with it. Once that specific problem clears up, your start with the next one.

Model Respect

Maybe the reason your child is defiant is because they take after you. Make sure you show respect every time you are with your child and they might follow in your footsteps. If they have once, they will again.

Don’t Be Too Intense

If the defiant attitude gets out of hand, don’t scream or yell at them. This only makes everything worse. You need to turn down the intensity and stay calm when things get out of hand. This will help them stay calm too.

Set Consequences

If you have told your child what you expect and they still refuse to obey, set a consequence for them. The consequences you set for your child must be clear to them, relate to what they did, and fit the child’s age. You don’t want something seriously out of hand, but you do want it to cause them misery so they have a higher chance of learning not to do something. Show your child you mean business. There are some consequences you can set:

• Time-out
• Loss of privileges
• Grounding
• Community Service

Teaching your child how to stop defiant behavior early in life will help them in the long run. Your child learns how to voice their opinions in a respectful matter and they develop healthier ways to communicate to you and their fellow peers.
